Before the talkies roared to life, Madeleine Céliat was already flickering across silent screens: first as the doomed seductee in 1911’s The Death of Don Juan, then caught between betrothal and eternity in 1914’s L’eterno fidanzamento, and finally draped in quattrocento silk for the 1916 spectacle Monna Vanna.
