Biography
A February chill hung over London on the 17th, 1869, the day Melville Stewart first drew breath. By 1915 he had stepped before the cameras twice—first into the gas-lit shadows of *After Dark*, then at a full-tilt gallop for *The Galloper*. Off-screen, Genevieve Finlay shared his name and his days. Summer had barely settled when, on 5 August that same year, Stewart’s final scene played out in Sea Gate, New York, closing the curtain on a life that had sprinted from Victorian London to the dawn of American cinema in barely forty-six circuits of the sun.
