Biography

Budapest, 10 November 1896: Olga Grey enters the world as Olga Grets. By 1915 she has already slipped into California’s brand-new studios, trading her surname for a silver-screen shimmer and stepping in front of D. W. Griffith’s crank cameras. In rapid succession she haunts His Lesson, engineers A Bold Impersonation, and then races through the colossal sets of Intolerance (1916) as the epic’s turmoil swirls around her. When the lights dim on her performing days, she stays in Los Angeles, watching the town mushroom into the global dream factory. She dies there on 25 April 1973, taking with her the last living memory of cinema’s most ambitious spectacle.
