Biography
Born in 1871 on the sun-baked streets of Odessa—then the Kherson Governorate of the Russian Empire, today a Ukrainian jewel—Olga Rakhmanova grew up to master both sides of the camera. She stepped before it as a magnetic actress and slipped behind it as a daring director, gifting early Russian cinema with Her Sister’s Rival (1916), the White-army thriller V tylu u byelykh (1925), and the lavish Korol Parizha (1917). Nearly three decades after her first flicker appeared on-screen, she took her final bow in Moscow on 23 December 1943, leaving behind a legacy etched in silent shadows and silver light.
