Biography

Salt Lake City, 19 April 1893: Ora Whytock opened her eyes to mountain air and Mormon spires. Twenty-two springs later she stepped before a camera, trading her name for the marquee-ready Ora Carew and debuting in the 1915 one-reeler [=tt2134074]. Silent-era Hollywood greeted her with bit parts and shrugged assignments—never the breakout scripts that crowned her rivals. Between shoots she waited, honed, hustled, snatching the occasional role that let her stretch a little further than the last. The talkie revolution arrived; Carew exited, quietly folding her career after the 1928 feature [=tt0248029]. Three decades later, on 26 October 1955, she died in Los Angeles at sixty-two, her footprints preserved only in flickering nitrate.
