Biography
Born on 17 April 1885 in the railroad town of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Pauline Neff stepped onto the early silent screens and made the camera notice her. Between 1914’s fast-footed comedy The Man from Mexico and the twin 1925 releases As No Man Has Loved and The Masked Bride, she moved from flickers to features, trading the Keystone chaos for melodrama’s slow-burn intensity. Off-screen, she shared her life with aviator-turned-cinematographer Frank Coffyn, a marriage that kept one foot on the ground while the other reveled in Hollywood’s skyrocketing dreams. She died in Los Angeles on 3 July 1951, leaving behind a slim but indelible reel of shadows that still flicker when the lights go down.
