Biography
On the 10th of January 1890, in the hill-perched town of Castroreale, Sicily, Pina Menichelli entered the world just as the silent era was preparing to unfurl its silver curtains. Within a decade she would glide before those curtains, her dark gaze and feline grace turning heads from Turin’s film studios to Parisian picture palaces. Audiences first thrilled to her in *The Rival Actresses* (1913), but it was *Il fuoco*—that blazing trilogy of spark, flame and ash released in 1916—that branded her name on the century. Four years later she stepped into *La dama de Chez Maxim’s* (1923), sealing her legend as the decadent, magnetic woman no man could forget. When the talkies arrived she slipped away, preserving the hush that had always served her mystery. Sixty-one summers after her final close-up, on 29 August 1984, she drew her last breath in Milan, the Lombard lights twinkling outside her window like celluloid stars that refused to dim.
