Richard Bartlett stepped in front of the camera just as Hollywood was learning to walk: 1913 found him trading quips in *Our New Minister*, the same year he sweated out the moral maze of *The Bribe*. Two years later he was still in the glow of the klieg lights, leading the ensemble of *The Pretenders* through its tangled ambitions. Silent reels and title cards have preserved the dates—1913, 1915—but the flicker of his performances still speaks.
