Set in late 17th-century England, the story follows Gwynplaine, the son of a rebel nobleman. After his father is executed by King James II, Gwynplaine is sold to 'comprachicos'—criminals who surgically disfigure children to sell them as performers. Left with a permanent, grotesque grin, Gwynplaine is rescued by an itinerant philosopher and grows up to be a famous circus attraction. He falls in love with Dea, a blind woman who cannot see his scars, but his life is upended when his noble lineage is rediscovered, dragging him into a cruel web of political intrigue and aristocratic boredom.
