Biography
A Pennsylvania steel-town boy who arrived on 18 June 1888, Robert Walker swapped Bethlehem’s blast furnaces for the klieg lights of early Hollywood. Between 1916 and 1937 he stacked up three very different screen lives: he brawled across the frontier in Gunsmoke Ranch, charmed his way through the silent charade The Fair Pretender, and wrestled conscience itself in The Gates of Eden. Off-camera he wrote, rewrote, and rewrote again—sometimes dialogue, sometimes endings, always his own marital vows: Ruth R., Cora J., and finally Vera each took a turn as Mrs. Walker. The curtain rang down on 4 March 1954 in Los Angeles, but the reels he left behind still spin.
