Biography
Romaine Fielding entered the world on 22 May 1868 in the prairie town of Riceville, Iowa, and spent the next fifty-nine years turning that quiet beginning into a whirlwind of flickering images. In front of the camera and behind it, he shaped early American cinema, steering audiences through A Dash for Liberty (1913), guiding them into Hiawanda’s Cross the same year, and sending them soaring up The Eagle’s Nest in 1915. Along the way he shared his life with two wives—actress Joan Arliss and later Mabel van Valkenburg—before the final curtain fell in Hollywood, California, on 15 December 1927.
