Biography

Troy, New York, welcomed Sarah McVicker in 1850, and by the time the cameras began to roll she had already spent decades commanding footlights. Silent audiences still remember her as the panicked mother in Traffic in Souls (1913), the haunted title character of The Sin Woman (1917), and the comic sparkplug of We Should Worry (1918). Off-screen she shared life—and a last name—with fellow performer James E. Conden. Her final curtain fell on 25 September 1923, in a Manhattan apartment overlooking the same city that had once cheered her from theater balconies.
