Biography
A winter’s day in 1881 Melbourne brought Stanley Walpole into the world, and the city’s theatres soon discovered the boy who could slip into any skin but his own. By 1919 he was haunting silent screens as the tormented lead of *The Price of Innocence*, and five years later he strode through history itself—first as a doomed general in *Wolfe and Montcalm*, then guiding pioneers in *Gateway to the West*. Off-camera he kept time with actress Ethel Phillips, his wife and most loyal scene-partner. Eighty-six years after his first curtain, Melbourne closed the story on 10 December 1967, welcoming its native son home for the final bow.
