Biography

On a winter’s day in 1884, Sydney Seaward first opened his eyes in the quiet Surrey hamlet of Blindley Heath. By the time the Twenties roared in, he had stepped before the cameras, lending his presence to the silent melodrama The Hundredth Chance and the disaster spectacle The Tidal Wave (both 1920). A dozen years later he dove into sound, surfacing in the 1932 underwater thriller Trapped in a Submarine. Seaward’s final curtain fell on 22 June 1967 in Matlock, Derbyshire, closing a life that had moved from rural England to the flickering dreamscapes of early British cinema.
