Biography
A Clerkenwell summer’s day—1 July 1866—delivered Tom McNaughton into the world, and the capital’s footlights soon claimed him. Between the flicker of early celluloid he made two lasting marks: the brisk marital mischief of *Has He Hit Me?* in 1897 and the slapstick botany of *Tillie’s Tomato Surprise* eighteen years later. Off-screen he shared his life with music-hall star Alice Lloyd, the pair navigating marriage while the century turned.
