Biography

A rail-thin Dane with a face as mobile as a silent-era flicker, Torben Meyer first drew breath in Århus on 1 December 1884. Within a few years he had slipped the fjords for the footlights, carving out a screen career that stretched from the shadow-play chills of *The Last Warning* (1928) to Preston Sturges’s carnival of laughter in *Sullivan’s Travels* (1941) and, finally, to the hushed moral reckoning of *Judgment at Nuremberg* (1961). Nearly half a century after leaving Denmark, he closed his final scene in Hollywood on 22 May 1975, a quiet exit for a performer who never needed words to speak volumes.
