Before the Revolution swept the old world away, Vera Gordina stepped before the camera and fixed her name to two of early Russian cinema’s most haunting tales: in 1913 she surfaced in The Hunchback’s Terrible Revenge, and two years later she returned as the embattled heroine of Daughter of Tormented Poland, sealing a brief but indelible flicker of stardom in the silent era’s first blaze.
