Biography

Werner Paul Raetzmann, the sixth of seven siblings raised in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, traded his Teutonic surname for the sleeker “Richmond” alongside one adventurous brother. On the family’s modest farm he mastered horses the way other boys master marbles; that knack would later land him in front of cameras instead of cattle. A 1910 Chicago census sheet lists him peddling musical novelties up and down the rail lines, but by 1912 he had swapped sheet music for celluloid, cranking out one-reelers on the East Coast. Maurice Tourneur snapped him up at Fort Lee’s Solax lot in 1917, and when the industry’s spotlight pivoted west, Richmond, wife in tow, resettled on a quiet Toluca Lake acreage with their young son. Never tethered to a single studio, he roamed from major to Poverty Row, logging silents, talkies, chapter plays, and two-fisted sagebrush yarns—among them the rocket-paced *Flash Gordon* serial. Over 34 relentless years he shared billing with everyone from Theda Bara to John Wayne, twice stepping into the buckled shoes of John Hancock. Horse spills eventually unseated him: a face-first tumble left half his smile temporarily unplugged. Months of stubborn rehab pulled the muscles back into place, and he re-saddled his career for a final stretch of judges, ranch dads, and slippery attorneys under the gaze of Ford, DeMille, Walsh, and a dozen other marquee directors.
