Biography
Louisville, Kentucky, welcomed William J. Gross into the world in August 1838. By the time the cameras began to roll, he had already spent decades onstage; when cinema finally called, he answered with three silent-era standouts—*The Plunderer* (1915), *The Barrier* (1917), and the dreamlike fantasy *The Blue Bird* (1918). Off-screen, he shared his life with Julia Parker, his wife and steadfast partner. Nearly six decades after his Kentucky beginnings, the curtain fell on 12 April 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, closing the career of a performer who had spanned gaslight and celluloid.
