Biography
Born among the snow-drifts of Geneseo, New York, on the first morning of 1885, Winifred Greenwood greeted 1910 by skipping down a yellow-brick road in the very first screen version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Twenty-five when that whirlwind shoot wrapped, she kept her face in front of hand-cranked cameras for another seventeen years, racking up thirty-four silent stories before the final slate clapped on Cecil B. DeMille’s biblical epic The King of Kings in 1927. She exited the spotlight as quietly as she had stepped into it, dying in Woodland Hills, California, on 23 November 1961 at seventy-six.
