Biography
Born in the snow-laced prefecture of Miyagi on 2 February 1895, Yutaka Abe stepped first onto the stage and then behind the camera, shaping Japan’s silent-era screen with a steady hand. He guided audiences through the suspense of Ashi ni sawatta onna in 1926, captured youthful fire in Taiyo no ko twelve years later, and distilled life into miniature with Shôhin eiga-shû: Pan in 1925. When the final reel flickered out, he remained in Kyoto, where he died on 3 January 1977, leaving the echo of his craft threading through Japanese cinema.
