Summary
A porcelain-pale foundling, lifted from the Yangtze’s fog by a widowed junkman, is swaddled in indigo silk and reared amid the clatter of sampans; when the old voyager’s lungs betray him, the child—now a moon-eyed girl with flaxen hair tucked beneath a conical hat—follows the scent of gunpowder and joss sticks across the Pacific, slipping into San Francisco’s dragon-throated alleys where paper lanterns bleach her skin the color of secrecy.
Synopsis
