Biography
Born in London on 7 August 1863, Alfred Sutro grew up to translate the city’s restless pulse into crisp dialogue and cunning plots. Between 1914 and 1921 he supplied the silent screen with three of its most talked-about adaptations—The Walls of Jericho, John Glayde’s Honor, and For Her Father’s Sake—turning West-End stage successes into flickering nationwide sensations. Off the set he shared his life with Esther Stella Isaacs, the woman who steadied the ink-stained whirlwind of his days. Sutro’s final curtain fell on 11 September 1933 in the leafy quiet of Surrey, but the rapid-fire wit he gave to early British cinema still crackles whenever the reels spin.
