Biography
Born among the market-town smells of Pontefract on 23 July 1880, Arthur Maude swapped the coal-scented air of Yorkshire for the hiss of carbon-arc lamps, carving out space on both sides of the camera. He steered silent shadows through The Shadow of Nazareth and Francesca da Rimini in 1913, then, two decades later, tightened the suspense of 1933’s talkie The Lure. Actor, director, perpetual ringmaster of flickering dreams, he took his final bow in Paddington, London, on 9 January 1950, leaving the projector humming without him.
