Biography
Chicago welcomed Basil Dickey on 23 November 1880, and from that windy city springboard he launched a career scripting cliff-hangers that kept Saturday-matinée audiences gasping. Serials became his playground: in 1940 he pitted Flash Gordon against planetary doom in *Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe*, tightened the mask on Marvel’s first screen hero for 1944’s *Captain America*, and later cooked up the ghostly mastermind haunting 1946’s *The Crimson Ghost*. Sixty-seven years after his first breath, Dickey’s final scene rolled on 17 June 1958 in sun-washed Long Beach, California, leaving behind reels of pulp immortality.
