Biography

Viborg, Denmark, greeted Benjamin Christensen on 28 September 1879, and from that moment he seemed destined to trade small-town quiet for the flicker of cinema screens. While Europe marched toward modernity, Christensen was already crafting shadows into stories, first behind the camera and then on the page. His 1916 thriller *Blind Justice* proved he could wring suspense from silence, but 1922’s *Häxan*—a fever-dream chronicle of witchcraft—turned folklore into cinematic fire, branding his name into film history. The talkie era lured him to Hollywood, where he let audiences tiptoe across *Seven Footprints to Satan* in 1929, a carnival of traps and temptations that showed his taste for the deliciously bizarre. Off-set, three marriages—Karen Winther, Sigrid Stahl, and Ellen Arctander—mapped the private chapters of a life spent conjuring public nightmares. When the final curtain fell on 2 April 1959 in Copenhagen, the projectors dimmed, yet the strange, bewitching worlds he summoned still glide across screens, as vivid as the day he first dreamed them.
