Biography

London welcomed Charles Klein on 7 January 1867, and before he turned fifty he had already stamped his name across Broadway marquees and silent-film title cards. A prolific dramatist, he spun the suspense that electrified The Gamblers in 1929 and twice—1914 and again in 1928—unleashed the power struggles that roar through The Lion and the Mouse. Off-stage, he shared his life with Lillian Gottlieb, his wife and steadfast ally. Fate, however, wrote a final act at sea: on 7 May 1915, within sight of Ireland’s Old Head of Kinsale, Klein’s story closed beneath the Atlantic waves.
