Biography
San Francisco’s own Clay M. Greene first drew breath on 12 March 1850, and the city’s foghorns were still echoing when he began turning life into stories. By 1915 he had stepped behind the camera, guiding Belle of Barnegat through its flickering reels; the next year he delivered twin 1916 gems, Millionaire Billie and Her Wayward Sister, sealing his reputation as a yarn-spinner who could make silence speak. Off-screen, two marriages—first to Mrs. Laura Hewett Robinson, later to Alice Randolph Wheeler—wrote private plots as intricate as any screenplay. Greene’s final curtain fell back where it rose, in San Francisco, on 5 September 1933.
