Summary
A pawnshop’s amber dusk hoards secrets like tarnished silver: inside, a foundling girl, Meg, grows amid ticking clocks and rusted loyalties while Harris Levi—keeper of collateral, custodian of absences—raises her as if love itself could be pawned and redeemed. Yearning to scrub the soot of the shop from her future, Harris ferries the adolescent to the sun-lit parlor of his urbane friend Robert, a man whose smile glimmers like newly-minted coin. Yet the past always collects its interest: Meg’s long-vanished mother re-enters, trailing revelations that detonate like flashpowder—Robert is both the girl’s progenitor and the paramour who once spirited away Harris’s own wife. In the emotional ledger books of the heart, debts cancel in surprising ways: Meg claims her patrimony, her parents reunite, and Chick Saxe—the boy whose glances once clattered like dice across the counter—becomes the jackpot she carries into the sunrise.
