Biography
April 1873: a London backstreet greeted the arrival of Edwin Magnus Ingleton, who would grow up to trade ink for celluloid. By 1917 he had marshalled cameras and actors into The Birth of Patriotism, a wartime rallying cry that flickered across music-hall screens. A year later he unveiled Mystic Faces, a shadow-drenched maze of disguises and secret doorways. In 1922 he shipped audiences onto storm-lashed decks with On the High Seas, proving his knack for salt-sprayed suspense. Writer, director, conjurer of narratives—Ingleton’s final curtain fell on 3 August 1936, far from Thames fog, in sun-baked Hollywood, Los Angeles.
