Biography

Born under the twin steeples of Versec on 22 September 1863, Ferenc Herczeg grew up in a borderland that has since shifted its flag twice. From that restless corner of the old Habsburg map he spun tales that traveled farther than he ever did—first onto candle-lit theatre boards, then onto the flickering screens of Europe. Audiences met his imagination as The Seven Sisters in 1915, flirted with it in Erotikon come 1920, and sailed it toward the stars in Szíriusz the year 1942. When the final curtain fell he had reached his ninety-first winter; Budapest claimed him on 24 February 1954, sealing the storyteller within the city that had always read him aloud.
