Biography
Harry A. Pollard first drew breath on 23 January 1879 amid the prairie winds of Republic City, Kansas, and spent the next fifty-five years shuttling between the two poles of early cinema—stepping in front of the camera as an actor, then ducking behind it to direct. Audiences of the silent era caught him steering the 1915 adventure The Quest, revving engines for 1925’s California Straight Ahead, and ticking toward midnight in 1929’s Tonight at Twelve. Off-screen, he shared life and work with leading-lady wife Margarita Fischer. His final fade-out came on 6 July 1934 in Pasadena, California, closing the reel on a career that helped steer Hollywood out of its infancy.
