Biography
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow first drew breath on 27 February 1807 amid the salt-scented streets of Portland, Maine. Verses poured from his pen like Atlantic fog, among them Temple of Our Fathers, the storm-battered narrative The Wreck of the Hesperus committed to film in 1948, and the hammer-song ode The Village Blacksmith brought to the screen in 1922. Two marriages framed his private life—Frances Elizabeth Appleton and, later, Mary Storer Potter. His final stanza closed on 24 March 1882 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where the Charles River keeps its quiet watch.
