Biography
A spring baby—2 April 1879—Hulbert Footner first drew breath amid the clang of Hamilton, Ontario’s steel-town streets. Before his fortieth birthday he had already spirited readers from smoky speakeasies (The Dangerous Blonde, 1924) to rickety river mansions (Ramshackle House, 1924) and the bittersweet ache of first love (Youth to Youth, 1922). Off the page he shared his life with Gladys Marsh, his wife and most loyal first-reader. Forty-four autumns after his Canadian sunrise, the storyteller closed his final chapter on 25 November 1944 in the quiet tidewater town of Lusby, Maryland.
