Biography

Seventh-child of a September day in 1860, Ippolit Rapgof drew his first breath amid the granite boulevards of Saint Petersburg. While the Winter Palace glittered along the Neva, he set about crafting illusions of his own: first on the page, then beneath the gaslights of the stage. Audiences of the waning Russian Empire knew him as the calculating face of Sonka zolotaya ruchka (1914) and, a year later, as the anguished spirit haunting Doch isterzannoy Pol'shi (1915). When revolution tore across his homeland in 1918, the curtain fell; Rapgof remained in Russia, his story closing somewhere within the turmoil of that same year.
