Biography
December 16, 1862, in the hill-country hickory-scented quiet of Stony Point, Kentucky, John Fox Jr. first opened his eyes; fifty-six years later, on July 8, 1919, they closed forever on the porch of a Big Stone Gap, Virginia home he had made famous in print. Between those two dates he spun mountain speech and feuds into fiction that traveled far beyond the ridges: *Heart o’ the Hills* reached screens in 1919, *The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come* followed in 1928, and *The Trail of the Lonesome Pine* bloomed into film a final time in 1936. Off the page he shared life, laughter, and a wedding ring with operatic firecracker Fritzi Scheff, proving a Bluegrass storyteller and a Viennese prima donna could harmonize.
