Biography

Vienna, 4 March 1866: Julius Steger enters the world of the Habsburg capital and will one day help shape the newborn art of cinema. Behind the camera he orchestrates dramas that raced across nickelodeon screens—Redemption in 1917, followed in swift succession by Just a Woman and Her Mistake, both released in 1918. Writer, director, and quiet pioneer, Steger eventually returned to the city of his birth, where he died on 26 February 1959, leaving Vienna with one of its earliest gifts to the silver screen.
