Owen Davis entered the world on 29 January 1874 in Portland, Maine. As a playwright‑turned‑screenwriter and producer, he helped shape early American cinema, penning and overseeing such titles as the 1925 silent comedy *Lazybones*, the 1930 musical *Spring Is Here*, and the 1938 melodrama *Jezebel*.
