Biography
Prato, Tuscany, August 10, 1877: Sem Benelli enters the world, a town of looms and wool soon to echo with his verses. By 1915 he lets *The Gorgona* loose, a drama that makes theatres gasp. Three years later he stirs the Adriatic with *Le figlie del mare*, a tidal tale of salt and sisters. World War II rages; Benelli answers with 1942’s *La cena delle beffe*, a banquet of poisoned masks and laughter. Winter finds him on December 18, 1949, in the cliff-top village of Zoagli, Liguria, where the Mediterranean finally closes his book.
