Biography
On a summer day in 1863, while cannon smoke still drifted over the Potomac, E.H. Calvert drew his first breath in Alexandria, Virginia. Fifty-eight years later, the flicker of silver screens carried his name from coast to coast. Calvert stepped before the camera for Vultures of Society in 1916, traded the silent glare of the lens for a megaphone to marshal The Wizard in 1927, then waltzed into history as a guiding hand behind Ernst Lubitsch’s first talkie, The Love Parade, in 1929. Off-set, romance followed him twice: first with leading lady Lillian Drew, later with fellow performer Thelma M. His final curtain fell on 5 October 1941 in Hollywood, California, closing a life that had spanned Civil War battlefields to the golden dawn of sound pictures.
