Biography
George Loane Tucker once kept train manifests in order; then, in 1913, he derailed polite society with Traffic in Souls, a six-reel lightning bolt about the white-slave trade. Shot in New York on a $57,000 stake—his own cash plus Carl Laemmle’s—the picture roared back with $450,000 in receipts. That avalanche of nickels bought Laemmle freedom from Edison’s patent vise and a one-way ticket west to plant the flag that would become Universal City. Off-screen, Tucker’s leading lady for life was Elisabeth Risdon.
