Biography

In 1911, Maurice Maître helped bring Tolstoy’s doomed heroine to the screen in the first known adaptation of Anna Karenina. Three years later he turned the camera on Oberammergau for The Life of Our Saviour; or, The Passion Play, capturing the centuries-old pageant in flickering silence. By 1920 he was bending time and perception itself in La boucle énigmatique, a film that loops mystery back on itself like a Möbius strip.
