Biography

Windham, Ohio welcomed Oliver D. Bailey on 25 April 1875, and from that quiet start he grew into a filmmaker who helped shape the grammar of early American cinema. Behind the camera he guided two 1915 landmarks—The Whirl of Life and The Melting Pot—then explored the darker corners of obsession in 1920’s Blind Love. Off-screen, he shared his life with writer Lillian A. Canfield. Bailey’s final curtain fell on 12 July 1932, among the pines of Harrison, Maine, but the flicker of the stories he told still dances across any screen that dares to dream in black-and-white.
