Biography

Born among the bluegrass of Cynthiana, Kentucky, on 16 September 1869, Richard Ridgely traded a quiet river town for the clamor of early film. Behind the camera he steered two 1915 melodramas—Eugene Aram and The Destroying Angel—while in front of it he romped through the 1914 mountain romance Meg o' the Mountains. Off-screen he shared his life with Cleo Ridgely, a fellow traveler in the flickering new art. Nearly eight decades after that first Kentucky sunrise, the curtain came down on 30 November 1949 in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York.
