Biography

Emerging from Glasgow, Scotland, on July 23, 1883, Stuart Paton became a foundational architect of early motion pictures. Balancing the roles of director and screenwriter, he is perhaps best remembered for the aquatic ambition of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916), the intrigue of The Gray Ghost (1917), and the aviation drama Clipped Wings (1937). Married to Ethel Patrick, Paton’s long career in the industry eventually drew to a close in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, where he passed away on December 16, 1944.
