Summary
A whimsical delve into Edwardian propriety and the absurd lengths to which men might stoop to navigate the delicate dance of marital obligation, "A Fitting Gift" unfurls a farcical tableau of escalating sartorial misadventure. Our protagonist, a dignified Judge, finds himself ensnared in the daunting quest for his wife's birthday present, a task made infinitely more perilous by his assistant, Harry's, ill-advised suggestion of a corset. The ensuing expedition to the haberdashery transforms into a veritable gauntlet of mortification, as the Judge, paralyzed by a crippling inability to articulate such an intimate request to a female sales assistant, retreats into the dubious sanctuary of a telephone booth. Harry, dispatched to brave the retail frontier, stumbles upon a startling revelation within the establishment's confines – a man, unashamedly clad in the very garment intended for feminine contours. This shocking spectacle propels Harry into a panicked retreat, only for both men to concoct an outlandish scheme: don women's attire themselves to circumvent social strictures. Their elaborate masquerade, however, is swiftly unravelled by the unexpected arrival of Mrs. Rummy, whose indignant pursuit shatters their fragile charade, culminating in a climactic, undignified flight through the streets, a testament to the chaotic repercussions of repressed desire and misplaced modesty.
