His circle of ragamuffin auditors, each nursing private static of broken homes and empty pockets, turns the parched alleyways into an invisible switchboard: tin-cans, scavenged copper wire, a crystal set cobbled from oatmeal boxes and rusted safety pins. One moonless dusk, while the town’s only bank exhales the last metallic clang of its vault, a gravel-voiced desperado with soot-black eyes slips inside; the boys’ headphones, however, intercept the faintest Morse-like pulse—half breath, half confession—of a pistol hammer clicking against steel. What follows is not a chase but a ballet of signals: the kids thread rooftop aerials into constellations, triangulate footfalls through reverb, and finally corner the thief inside an abandoned textile mill whose looms still mutter like aging prophets. In the penultimate reel, Johnny’s trembling hand lowers the volume knob; silence itself becomes handcuffs as sheriff’s boots echo through lint-draped corridors. The captured man, once a mythic silhouette on WANTED posters, shrinks to a shivering nobody whose voice—now stripped of menace—pleads for the same invisible audience that once amplified his crimes.
