El lazarillo de Tormes

In the dusty, unforgiving landscape of 16th-century Spain, a young boy named Lázaro is forced into a life of nomadic servitude. Born in a gristmill on the Tormes River, his childhood is quickly traded for the bitter lessons of survival. The film tracks his evolution from an innocent child to a cynical 'pícaro' as he passes through the hands of increasingly neglectful masters. He begins with a cruel blind man who teaches him that survival requires more cunning than honesty, then moves to a miserly priest who starves him, and eventually finds himself serving a penniless squire whose obsession with 'honor' is as hollow as his stomach. Florián Rey’s adaptation strips away the romanticism often found in period dramas, focusing instead on the physical and moral hunger that defines the human condition when society fails its most vulnerable.
