Mathusalem

Mathusalem is a surrealist exploration of the eternal bourgeois, personified by a man who has lived for centuries through sheer greed and industrial momentum. Based on Ivan Goll's 1922 'Überdrama,' the story follows the titular Mathusalem as he navigates a world where his children rebel, animals engage in philosophical debate, and his very existence becomes a satirical monument to capitalist excess. The film serves as a bridge between German Expressionism and the burgeoning Theater of the Absurd, utilizing avant-garde filmed sequences to represent the subconscious dreams and mechanical nightmares of a society obsessed with production. It is a fragmented, hallucinatory look at the decay of the middle class, where logic is discarded in favor of grotesque, rhythmic imagery.
