In the midst of a theatrical troupe's misadventures, Polly, the charming ingenue, finds herself stranded and broke in her New York City hometown. Alongside her friend Bunny, she concocts a scheme to deceive the nouveau riche Hawkers, a family from Kansas, into believing they are a seasoned French maid-and-butler duo. As Polly navigates her newfound role, she captures the heart of young Zeke Hawker, but her own affections lie with the esteemed actor MacGillicuddy, a neighbor of the Hawkers. The evening of a lavish party hosted by Mrs. Hawker takes an unexpected turn when her jewels are pilfered, and Polly becomes the prime suspect. A labyrinthine series of events unfolds until Polly uncovers the true identities of the thieves, ultimately clearing her name and resolving the chaos that has engulfed the Hawker household.
